Download and Print Binaries
To download the chapters, simply double-click
the link (below), which should prompt you to save (or open - depnding
on how you've configured your browser) a file called GUIDE.ZIP.
This file (GUIDE.ZIP) is a compressed archive of print-to-disk
binaries (print only), formatted for an HP 4/4M printer (non-PS).
This standard was adopted since it is about as close to a "generic"
standard as we could find. The first edition was formatted for an HP III,
but this posed real limits on the precision and detail of some of the
graphics. The GUIDE.ZIP file is fairly large (890K or so), so it might
take some time to download.
Printing a file is very easy:
- Once you've extracted the GUIDE.ZIP archive, you will see a series of
files: chapter1.prn -> chapter9.prn, appendix.prn, and a few other *.prn
files.
- From the DOS
prompt, copy the file to your laser printer as a binary file. To do this,
type the following from the command prompt:
copy/b
chapter name.prn prn: <enter> (e.g., copy/b chapter1.prn
prn: <enter>).
The "/b" switch is needed to copy as
a binary file. The .prt files are often very large - sometimes 4-5
megabytes in size, so printing can take some time (often 3-5 minutes
depending on the file). - Once the file has successfully printed,
delete the .ZIP and .PRN files (unless you want to print more copies
later).
