SURGE (SURvival Generalized Estimation) is one of the most widely used software applications for analysis of mark-recapture data.
However, it is not one of those applications that you can learn to use without some instruction. Current documentation for SURGE was not written for a broad audience - it was written by the people who developed the program, primarily for pe
ople with some background in the theory of mark-recapture analysis. It was not written to serve as a comprehensive introduction on how to use the software.
It was with this latter aim that we wrote this book. It has been written so that, in practice, you can teach yourself how to use SURGE.
We have included much of the material normally covered in classroom or workshop sessions, placing as much emphasis on "why things work the way they do" as on "now...press this button". Our philosophy throughout is based
on the belief that the only way to master software is to understand what it is doing, and why.
