Pre-EBCC conference workshop
Statistical mapping and modeling of distribution and abundance using R, WinBUGS and JAGS

Instructors: Marc Kéry & Jérôme Guélat, Swiss Ornithological Institute
Date: 11–13 September 2013
Venue: Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj Napoca, Romania (same as EBCC conference; see http://www.ebcc2013.ro)
Costs: 300/200 Euro (normal/student rate), 150/80 Euro (normal/student rate for countries East of, and not including, Hungary)

This course covers several key models used in the spatio-temporal analysis of distribution and abundance at large spatial scales (e.g., for monitoring data), both in a likelihood and in a Bayesian analysis framework. We use programs R (especially package unmarked) and WinBUGS and JAGS. The course includes:

• Introduction to distribution and abundance in ecology and applied fields (e.g., conservation, biodiversity and disease monitoring)
• Introduction to spatial data in R
• Introduction to hierarchical models
• Frequentist and Bayesian analysis of statistical models
• Single-season occupancy models (MacKenzie et al., Ecology, 2002) for statistical mapping and modeling of static distributions
• Dynamic occupancy models (MacKenzie et al., Ecology, 2003) for analysis and mapping of species range dynamics
• N-mixture models (Royle, Biometrics, 2004) for analysis of static or dynamic patterns in abundance
• Accounting for spatial autocorrelation (e.g., CAR and kriging models) in models of distribution and abundance

This is an introductory workshop and previous experience with programs BUGS or JAGS, or Bayesian statistics, is not assumed (though it would be helpful). A good working knowledge of modern regression methods (e.g., ANOVA, ANCOVA, generalised linear models) and of program R is required.

Please bring your own laptops and install a recent version of R plus WinBUGS 1.4., with upgrade patch and immortality key decoded (in this order). Alternatively, JAGS and OpenBUGS work fine for almost everything (except for CAR models in JAGS). Also install the R packages unmarked, arm, raster, spdep, gstat and rgdal (and their dependencies).

Send your application to Marc Kéry (marc.kery@vogelwarte.ch), describing your background and knowledge in statistical modeling, R and WinBUGS/OpenBUGS/JAGS, by 21 June 2013 at the latest. Workshop invitations will be sent out in late June 2013.

Note: This workshop takes place immediately before the 19th international conference of the European Bird Census Council (EBCC) at the same venue; see http://www.ebcc2013.ro.
