I am working on a wild turkey research project related to the survival of adult gobblers. We had about 200 or so turkeys that had backpack transmitters attached and so we could determine the exact date of death and investigate the cause. We also attached leg bands to each turkey. I was going to run a known-fate model for the transmitter birds, but I was asked by a professor if we can include the leg band data in the model. The question was if a turkey had a transmitter fall off, but then we discover it harvested a year or two later based on the leg band, could that death be included in the model some way. I was under the impression that including that mortality in any way would inflate mortality because the only reason that the bird was found again was because it was killed. I believe there is no real way to combine leg bands and transmitters into one study, but I thought I would ask and see if anyone on here believes I am correct or not. Let me know your thoughts.
