Repeat count data with negative binomial distribution

I have a modeling problem with Royle repeat count data estimate in Presence software.

I want to use negative binomial distribution. But I don’t understand the meaning of the parameters u and a. Could you help me ?

u=mu, and a=alpha in the Royle-Nichols Ecology paper. They are the parameters of the negative binomial distribution, such that:
