Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate

Duty Station: Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD

Timeframe: Jan. 1, 2008 – December 30, 2008 (possibility of 1 additional year)

Project Title: Predictive Modeling for Adaptive Management of Horseshoe Crabs and Shorebirds in Delaware Bay

The proposed project will develop and implement predictive modeling for adaptive management of horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) and shorebird (focus on red knots, Calidris canutus rufa) populations in Delaware Bay. The tasks include 1) working with managers, researchers, and stakeholders to formulate objectives, management alternatives, and conceptual models; 2) formulating and evaluating a set of models to predict ecological change as consequences of management alternatives across a range of relevant ecological conditions and population states, 3) computing optimal decision matrices specifying optimal actions as a function of the relevant ecological states, 4) presenting results to management boards and technical committees to support decisions, and 5) preparing papers on modeling results and case studies for peer-reviewed journals and presentations. Applicant should have Ph.D. in quantitative ecology, operations research or statistics with skills, or at least keen interest, in modeling and optimization methods (e.g., stochastic dynamic programming). Applicant must be able to communicate with a diverse group of stakeholders including fisheries managers, shorebird biologists, horseshoe crab biologists, and conservationists. Although the official duty station will be Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, some overnight travel will be required including some travel to work with collaborators at Leetown Science Center in West Virginia. Salary will be competitive. Potential applicants should contact either:
