Minimum Requirements:

1. M. S. in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, or Ecology. PhD preferred.
2. B. S. in Biological Sciences
3. Experience using Program R to conduct spatial analysis of wildlife telemetry data.
4. Lead author on a minimum of 1 peer-reviewed publication.

Position Overview:

The research associate will be work on an applied elk movement and population ecology research project. The research project is co-directed by Dr. Proffitt (Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks) and Dr. Jay Rotella (Montana State University). This purpose of the research project is to provide information to enhance elk population and habitat management in Montana. Elk populations in many areas of Montana that are above the population abundance objectives require more detailed information regarding elk movement and habitat selection to inform management strategies. The research associate will develop and lead a project to broadly evaluate factors such as habitat quality, security, and hunter access associated with elk distributions and population trajectories. The research associate will also play a supporting role in other aspects of the project and may assist with graduate student mentoring.

The research associate will be involved in project development, data analysis and scientific writing. The position will require experience using Program R to manage data, conduct spatial analyses and analyze demographic data. Experience using Program R to manage large datasets and to develop and conduct spatial analyses of wildlife telemetry data is required. The position will require excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to coordinate with multiple agency and University staff. An interest in working closely with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks staff to develop relevant questions and communicate research findings is required.

Position Location: Bozeman, Montana

Salary: $45K per year plus benefits
