Climate vulnerability of wild turkeys across the southeastern U.S.

The postdoc will work with a team of researchers at NC State (Drs. Krishna Pacifici and Chris Moorman), LSU (Dr. Bret Collier), UGA (Dr. Mike Chamberlain), and the USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (Dr. Adam Terando) to explore the multiplicative effects of climate and hunter harvest on wild turkeys to help guide localized harvest regimes (e.g., timing of the hunting season) across the southeastern U.S.. Using >10 years of reproduction data from six states, the postdoc will assess the relative importance of short-term weather events, longer-term weather shifts, and extreme weather events on reproductive timing and output. Combining information on the relative contributions of weather and climate with variation in reproduction due to phenological cues, the postdoc will make projections about the overall influence of climate on reproduction in wild turkeys. The postdoc will work closely with stakeholders (federal and state agency biologists, National Wild Turkey Federation staff) to disseminate this information. Given the large amount of data, the postdoc will also have the opportunity to develop and pursue independent research questions.

Start date: July 1, 2021
Duration: 2 years

Salary: $60,000/year and includes benefits (health insurance)

Minimum requirements/Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. in quantitative ecology, wildlife ecology, or related fields.
2. Knowledge of GIS/geospatial analysis in R, statistics and modeling with special emphasis on Bayesian hierarchical modeling.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research group.
4. Commitment to maintaining an inclusive work environment.

Highly Desirable:
1. Record of peer-reviewed publications
2. Proficiency with Bayesian modeling either through existing software (JAGS/Nimble/Stan) or customizable samplers
3. Spatiotemporal modeling experience (e.g., spatial statistics and time series)
4. Experience working with and managing large heterogeneous data sets
