Agency: Pennsylvania State University

Location: University Park, PA

Job Category: Graduate Assistantship

Salary: ~27,000, including summer salary. PSU also provides health, dental, and vision benefits.

Start Date: August 2020

Description: We are seeking an individual interested in pursuing a M.Sc. focusing on wildlife space-use and movement ecology. The student will assist with two ongoing projects with the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) that focus on ungulates. Since 2013, the PGC has collared white-tailed deer and performed vegetation surveys in four study areas across the state. Using these data, the student will explore white-tailed deer movement in response to changes in forest structure, reproductive status, and hunting pressure. In the second project, the PGC is using vaginal implant transmitters to determine elk calving locations. The student will use this data to explore methods for identifying calving based on telemetry locations. The student may also pursue additional elk questions related to identifying subpopulations and linking them to landscape-level movement boundaries. Student would have opportunities to assist with fieldwork on both projects.

Anticipated start date is August 2020.

Qualifications: Qualified applicants should have a B.S. Wildlife Ecology, Zoology, Natural Resources, or related field. Qualified candidates will also demonstrate experience or interest in applying quantitative methods to wildlife systems and experience with R is preferred. Previous experience with movement data/modeling not necessary.

To apply: Send a single PDF that includes a brief cover letter outlining experience and research interests, curriculum vitae, unofficial university transcripts (a list of relevant coursework and grades is acceptable), and contact information for two references to Franny Buderman at fbuderman@psu.edu. Applications will be reviewed beginning 4/20 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found.
