Call for Applications

Background
We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow to join our research team group which recently received a 3-year Collaborative Research Team grant from the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI). The project titled Addressing Spatial and Computational Issues in Integrated Analysis of Modern Ecological Data, is led by Simon Bonner (University of Western Ontario), Laura Cowen from (University of Victoria), and Saman Muthukumarana (University of Manitoba). Further members of the team include collaborators from the University of Waterloo, Université Laval, Simon Fraser University, CNRS (France), and the University of St. Andrews, as well as partners from several non-academic institutions (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Bird Studies Canada, LGL Environmental Research Associates, InnoTech Alberta, and J Hobbs Ecological Consulting).

Our aim is to develop, test, and implement statistical methodologies for modelling wildlife populations from combined data sources. Three main studies included in this project will comprise: 1) spatial modelling of high resolution digital photography from camera traps and other data types to assess wildlife use of reclaimed areas within the Alberta Oil Sands, 2) modelling acoustic telemetry data in combination with other data sources from fish in Lake Winnipeg in order to understand movements and habitat use, and 3) making use of data from miniaturized radio-tracking equipment used in Motus in combination with traditional banding and count data to model the movements of migratory birds. In each of these studies we will examine how data from multiple sources may be combined to improve our understanding of these systems.

Duties
The post-doctoral fellow (PDF) funded through this award will play an integral role both in the research and in managing the teams’ activities. The PDF will bring expertise in the areas of spatial statistics which will add to the skills of the research team and provide specific abilities in the analysis of spatial data. The PDF will lead the spatial camera trap modelling and will help to supervise a PhD student working on this project, under the direction of Bonner and Cowen. The PDF will also participate in the other two sub-projects areas by adding to the development of spatial models for the acoustic and VHF telemetry data. The PDF will also help to organize the annual meetings of the entire team, participate in the bi-monthly progress meetings, lead the bi-weekly reading group, and travel between the three host universities to participate on all of the projects and help build cohesion amongst the team members.

Support
The total salary for the will be $55,000 (CAD) per year plus. Anticipated start date is September 2020, for a period of two years.

Application
Please contact either Saman Muthukumarana (Saman.Muthukumarana@umanitoba.ca), Laura Cowen (lcowen@uvic.ca), or Simon Bonner (sbonner6@uwo.ca) by June 15, 2020, if you are interested in these positions.
