Post-doctoral Research Position

Postby llbailey » Mon Jun 12, 2017 8:26 am

POSITION TITLE: Post-doctoral Research Position
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, benefits included.
PERFORMANCE PERIOD: Up to two years after start date (Contingent upon appropriation of funds)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: July 3, 2017, or until suitable candidate is found

POSITION SUMMARY:

Brown Treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) were introduced to Guam from the Admiralty Islands after World War II and have subsequently been linked to the declines and extirpations of many of Guam’s native vertebrates. These extinctions represented a significant loss of these species’ range and presented a case study of the havoc that invasive snakes can be cause on native ecosystems. The recent development of Aerial Delivery Systems (ADS) for acetaminophen-laced bait, which is toxic to Brown Treesnakes, has created the first realistic scenario for large-scale control of Brown Treesnakes; however, many unknowns remain concerning the best approaches towards successful suppression and eradication of invasive snake populations on Guam and elsewhere.

Colorado State University is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position to work with USGS scientists to address these informational and management needs by generating novel research associated with a multi-year study on suppression or eradication of Brown Treesnakes in USGS Closed Population (a 5-hectare study site closed to emigration or immigration of snakes). Using simulated ADS in an adaptive management framework, the Post-Doc will analyze collected and past data to determine ecosystem effects of management actions and determine optimal future conservation efforts.

DUTIES:

The Post-Doc will be stationed on-site in Guam, and work with collaborators to develop and test research questions associated with impacts of Brown Treesnake suppression at local and landscape scales. The Post-Doc will participate, or lead, data collection efforts associated with the multi-year study on suppression of Brown Treesnakes using simulated Aerial Delivery Systems in the USGS Closed Population and/or snake barriers that are used as a means of preventing spread, or reducing population connectivity, of snakes. Specific goals include: (1) using an adaptive management framework to identify optimal management actions associated with ADS to suppress or eradicate Brown Treesnakes, (2) write scientific papers giving details of the analysis and the management outcomes with respect to management objectives, (3) develop monitoring protocols to inform future management decisions in Guam or in other potential areas, and (4) relate research findings to managers to improve control and containment strategies of Brown Treesnakes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. PhD in Zoology, Ecology, Biology, Statistics, or Wildlife and/or Conservation Biology, or related quantitative field.
2. Demonstrated field experience in invasive species, population estimation, or modeling.
3. Demonstrated proficiency with statistical software used to estimate community and population vital rates.
4. Demonstrated desire and proficiency to publish in the peer-reviewed literature.
5. Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

DESIRED ABILITIES:

Competitive candidates will have proficient programming skills using data analysis software (e.g., Program R). The successful candidate will have excellent written and personal communication skills, an ability to work with people, and experience with tropical or island ecosystems. Experience with decision theory and management agencies is desirable
