Graduate (Ph.D.) Assistantship: Brown Treesnake Movement

Postby llbailey » Tue May 16, 2017 3:12 pm

Description: Accidental translocation of Brown Treesnakes from Guam to other islands represents a significant threat to ecological stability for many Pacific Islands, but movement patterns of translocated snakes are poorly understood. This Ph.D. project involves translocating radio telemetered snakes to similar and novel habitats on Guam and comparing their movement rates and behavioral patterns to non-translocated (control) individuals. A major focus will be on developing statistical models to forecast Brown Treesnake post-translocation movement, dispersal, and detectability, to inform interdiction and rapid response efforts. Extensive travel to Guam for fieldwork and presentations will be required (6-12 months). Housing in a shared government field house will be provided in Guam. This collaborative project involves Colorado State University faculty and scientists at USGS Fort Collins Science Center. Results are expected to inform effective management of Brown Treesnakes on Guam and other Pacific Islands and will likely be transferable to other invasive reptile species.

Desired qualifications include GPA ≥ 3.5, combined Quantitative and Verbal GRE scores > 70%. Applicants should be highly motivated with a strong work ethic, advanced quantitative background, and well-developed oral and written communication skills. Preference will be given to students with a proven publication record. Experience in spatial ecology, herpetology, and radio telemetry are highly desirable.
