A position is open for a Post-Doctoral Associate (PDA) in the either the Department of Biology or the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences at Western University in London, Ontario. The PDA will work within Dr. Simon Bonner’s research group developing and testing new statistical methodology for analyzing data from complex ecological studies. Specific projects may include 1) modeling social behavior from mark-recapture data, 2) estimating abundance from unplanned citizen science projects with spatial constraints, and 3) studying the movements of small passerine birds based on data from Bird Studies Canada’s Motus wildlife tracking system (see http://motus-wts.org/). The PDA will also be responsible for writing and submitting papers and presenting work at scientific meetings, and is expected to take an active role in Dr. Bonner’s research group by mentoring graduate students and participating in joint research projects.

Qualifications:

The PDA should be an independent worker with a PhD in statistics or in biology/wildlife management with a strong background in quantitative methods. Knowledge of mark-recapture methodology and Bayesian inference; statistical computing in R; strong communication skills; and the ability to work with applied researchers are key. Experience programming in other computer languages including BUGS/JAGS, STAN, or C and experience with cluster computing would all be assets.

Term:

Dr. Bonner is jointly appointed in the Department of Biology and the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences and the PDA may choose to be housed in either. The anticipated start date is between August 2017 and January 2018 and support is available for two years.

Compensation:
