Do you want an interesting and challenging leadership role in conservation? Are you looking at broadening your horizons and applying your knowledge and skills to address novel statistical and conservation problems?

We are looking for a highly motivated applied statistician to lead the department’s statistical work from within the Planning, Monitoring and Reporting team. This permanent position is a unique opportunity to lead statistical design, analysis, and training underpinning the science base for conserving NZ’s native biodiversity and facilitating enjoyment of our natural and cultural heritage. In your role you will have the chance to engage in complex interesting statistical problems that benefit conservation while working with the New Zealand and international statistical community.


Required qualifications:

  • PhD or Masters level qualification in statistics or equivalent
  • Ten or more years of experience applying statistics
  • Peer reviewed publications
  • Experience in the design and management of research investigations
  • Statistical programming experience (preferably R)
  • Written and oral communications skills, including the ability to convey complex statistical concepts to a wide audience
  • Experience with observational study design and analysis


Other qualifications:

Reproducible research methods using RMarkdown, Shiny or LaTeX
Teaching experience
Experience with social and/or ecological studies


As the successful candidate you will be encouraged to travel across New Zealand to engage with staff in many different offices. You will have opportunities to become involved hands on with data in the field, including on monitoring programmes you helped design. You will apply your significant knowledge and experience to make a major impact on conservation management across New Zealand.


The remuneration in this role is roughly equivalent to NZ university senior lecturer level.
