DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University’s Department of Fisheries Biology invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Quantitative Fishery Science.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An undergraduate or graduate degree in Fisheries Biology or equivalent, and an earned doctorate or equivalent in Quantitative Fisheries or related discipline (e.g., Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematical Modeling) from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

 Commitment and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
 Record of, or potential for, involving students in fisheries-related research and scholarly activity;
 Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
 Ability to teach courses in fish population dynamics, fisheries management, and intermediate/ advanced statistics; and
 Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

 Experience in statistical consultation;
 Expertise and ability to teach advanced statistical topics to students from the natural sciences with introductory or intermediate backgrounds in statistics;
 Experience in stock assessment and providing quantitative assistance to fisheries management agencies.

At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. Evidence of degree(s) is required at time of hire.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong record of publication and grantsmanship. The successful candidate will complement existing strengths in freshwater and marine fish ecology, water quality, genetics, and aquaculture. Regular areas of instructional assignments may include Fish Population Dynamics, Fisheries Conservation and Management (introductory and advanced), and Statistics (two or more areas of advanced applied statistics, such as sampling theory, mulitvariate analysis, time series analysis, mixed effects and hierarchical models, and model selection). Occasional areas of instruction may include introductory or intermediate statistics classes. Specific instructional assignments will be consistent with the expertise of the successful candidate and the programmatic needs of the departments of Fisheries Biology and Mathematics. Other expected duties include statistical consultation for students (primarily MS level graduate students) in the College of Natural Resources, and direction of graduate student research in the Fisheries option of the MS in Natural Resources.

The Humboldt State University (HSU) Fisheries Biology program has excellent facilities for fisheries research, including a fish hatchery, fish genetics laboratory and fish museum on-campus; a wet lab and small aquarium facilities located at the HSU Marine Lab in Trinidad (12 miles north); and a 90’ ocean-going research vessel, located in Eureka (10 miles south), used in instruction and faculty research. The HSU Mathematics Department has a long history of support of programs in the Natural Resources. In addition to hosting statistics courses for the College of Natural Resources, faculty within the Mathematics Department participate in the Mathematical Modeling Option of the Environmental Systems Graduate Program at HSU. Collaboration with colleagues in the Mathematical Modeling Option is strongly encouraged.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members at HSU are teaching, research & scholarship with graduate and undergraduate students, and service to the University, profession and to the community. Responsibilities of instructional faculty include: advising undergraduate students, supervising MS student research projects, participating in department, campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in other traditional academic functions.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Humboldt State University offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate (MS) programs in Fisheries Biology. Few, if any, academic programs provide such a strong interplay between classroom theory and field or laboratory practice. The Pacific Ocean, Humboldt Bay, coastal lagoons, major coastal rivers, commercial fishing fleets, and commercial aquaculture operations are nearby and easily accessible for research and teaching opportunities.
