PhD Position

Postby vdreitz » Fri Nov 22, 2013 9:32 pm

I am seeking a motivated student to conduct research towards a PhD degree in the Wildlife Biology Program at the University of Montana, Missoula, Montana. This position involves analytical advancement with monitoring and research data on avian species to address multiple ecological and monitoring design questions. Possible directions of research include, but are not limited to, effects of small- and large-scale ecological conditions (e.g., land-cover/land-use, management actions, and climate), temporal changes in species and communities, and the conservation implications of these effects. The student will have considerable latitude and assistance with developing the direction of their work. Multiple databases will be available for analyses and enable unique perspectives and new syntheses about the small- and broad-scale drivers of avian population(s) and community dynamics. Opportunities may be available for incorporating field work into research projects. The overarching goals of this work are to improve understanding of the large-scale ecological factors that drive short and long temporal and spatial dynamics of individual avian populations and communities, and to use this knowledge to inform avian conservation policy, planning, and implementation. Start date for the position is anticipated to be January 2014. The project includes partnerships with multiple natural resource agencies.
Qualifications:
Applicant must have a BS/BA in wildlife biology, biology, ecology, statistics, or a related field. Strong quantitative are required. Experience with databases and program R is necessary. The position requires supervisory and decision-making skills, the ability to work independently and within a team, and a willingness to travel and work an unusual schedule in isolated prairie habitats is essential. Experience working with multiple stakeholders and natural resource agencies is highly desired.
How to apply:
Interested individuals should email Dr. Victoria J. Dreitz (Victoria.Dreitz@cfc.umt.edu) with 1)
a cover letter outlining research interests, academic and professional background 2) resume/CV, 3) copies of transcripts and GRE scores (unofficial copies acceptable at this point), and 4) names and contact information for 3 references. Only individuals who meet the minimum requirements of the Wildlife Biology Program at the University of Montana will be considered (see website for more details: http://www.cfc.umt.edu/WBIO/ ). See http://www.cfc.umt.edu/Decs/Details.php?ID=1903 for more information on Dr. Dreitz and her research interests. Applications will be reviewed as received.
