Postdoctoral Project Manager

The Opportunity:

The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute (CKWRI; http://www.ckwri.tamuk.edu/) at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and East Wildlife Foundation (EWF; http://www.eastfoundation.net/) are soliciting applications for a 3-year position with a focus on designing, implementing, and evaluating a EWF-wide program to monitor large mammal populations. The EWF operates an integrated program of research, education, and outreach to support wildlife conservation and other public benefits of ranching and private land stewardship. The EWF properties include six separate ranches covering over 215,000 acres in the south Texas sand-sheet region. The CKWRI is a research unit at Texas A&M University-Kingsville dedicated to understanding the ecology and promoting the wise management of wildlife and rangelands in southern Texas and northern Mexico.

Job Description:

The Postdoctoral Project Manager will design, implement, and evaluate monitoring activities intended to detect short- and long-term changes in large mammal populations on the EWF properties. White-tailed deer, collared peccaries, nilgai antelope, and feral pigs will be monitored using aerial surveys. Distance sampling and mark-recapture approaches will be used to account for animals not observed. A strong applicant should have experience designing, implementing, and evaluating similar monitoring programs, strong quantitative skills, and familiarity with remote sensing and GIS. This is a full time position and the Project Manager is expected to design, organize, and conduct aerial surveys, work with and train field personnel, including graduate and undergraduate students, and analyze survey data. The successful applicant will also provide guidance to CKWRI students and faculty in analyzing population estimation data from mark-recapture, mark-resight, and distance-sampling studies. A portion of the Project Managers’ time can be spent pursuing individual research interests that align with the mission of the CKWRI and the EWF. The Project Manager will be expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals. Expected annual salary is $60,000, depending on qualifications, plus benefits.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

Applicants should have completed or met all the requirements for a Ph.D. by the start date of the position (expected August 2013 but no later than January 2014). Preference will be given to applicants with experience surveying large mammals from a helicopter, in using software programs MARK and DISTANCE to estimate demographic parameters of wildlife populations, and in publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals. The Project Manager will be an employee of Texas A&M University-Kingsville and will be expected to reside in Kingsville, Texas. Office space and administrative support will be provided on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville (CKWRI).
