I received the following ad for a position in the Deparment of Statistics at the University of Wyoming and thought that it might be of interest to some members of the forum. Note that the department is specifically looking for individuals with interests in Bayesian statistics applied to earth science, ecology, and energy research.

Please contact the department directly at the address below if you are interested.

Cheers,

Simon

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION

DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING

The Department of Statistics at the University of Wyoming is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting August 2012. Candidates should have a PhD in Statistics or closely related quantitative field by the start of the appointment. Both research and teaching are important at the University of Wyoming, and the position requires dedication and proficiency in both areas. For this position, the successful candidate is expected to have research interests in computational statistics. Capabilities in Bayesian modeling and analysis and interest in interdisciplinary and collaborative research are also highly desirable. Interdisciplinary connections with earth science, ecology, and energy research are particularly welcome.

The Department is small but active, with significant breadth of disciplinary interests. Our department is one of the oldest stand-alone statistics departments in the country. We have always valued strong applied research in statistics, and have a history of joint appointments with areas such as zoology, geology, economics, sociology, and botany. Our current 6 regular faculty members and 21 graduate students are tied to research projects and grants with bioinformatics, botany, computer science, ecology, engineering, geography, geology, mathematics, molecular biology, veterinary science, and zoology. More and more, interesting collaborations for statisticians demand highly computational approaches, and the position advertised is designed to strengthen the capabilities of our department and the university in computational science.

A very exciting development at the University of Wyoming is a partnership with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to design and construct a world class center for high performance computing in the atmospheric and related geosciences. The NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) is scheduled to be operational by early to mid 2012. Statistics department connections with NCAR already exist, and UW statisticians with relevant research interests will have access to this supercomputer. The university's commitment to computational science is real and growing, and a statistician who wishes to work and contribute in this area will have excellent opportunities at the University of Wyoming. Interviewees will be invited to stop at NCAR in Boulder, CO, as part of their visit.

Nearby are excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing, and rock-climbing. The Denver metropolitan area is two hours to the south, and the University offers a good range of cultural offerings.
