Quantitative Ecology Postdoctoral Researcher
Michigan State University

The Zipkin Quantitative Ecology Lab at Michigan State University seeks a postdoctoral scholar to work with The Forest Functional Ecology Lab at University of Michigan on an NSF funded project “Consistencies and contingencies of functional responses to environmental changes in tropical forests” to identify the functional mechanisms of how droughts affect tree communities in the tropics. The richness of the available datasets - and potential ecological questions that can be investigated - allow for ample ability to explore many avenues of research and we seek a researcher with enthusiasm to pursue related projects that interests them. The postdoctoral scholar will work collaboratively with the two project PIs (Elise Zipkin and (Maria) Natalia Umaña) to develop models, carry out analyses, and write manuscripts.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a PhD in ecology, plant biology, statistics, or a related field by the start of the position. Applicants are expected to have a strong work ethic, excellent communication and time management skills, and demonstrated experience publishing scientific research. Proficiency with program R is required. Candidates with experience in Bayesian hierarchical analysis, community modeling, and programming with JAGS and/or NIMBLE are especially encouraged to apply. We seek someone with strong analytical skills and a background in forest ecology. Although not required, previous experience with functional traits would be highly valued.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position has been filled. To apply for the position, please email a cover letter including previous experience, research interests and motivation for applying, CV, and three references to Dr. Elise Zipkin (ezipkin@msu.edu). The preferred start date is between August and December 2022 although there is a lot of flexibility.

The PIs value diversity and are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment. Michigan State is an excellent place to be a postdoc, with a favorable cost-of-living to salary ratio, as well as 68 other labs in the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior (EEB) program. The postdoc will have opportunities to attend workshops and conferences and become involved in other lab projects. This is a full-time, 12-month, fixed-term position, with reappointment conditional on satisfactory performance. Starting salary is $55k/yr plus benefits.
