Modeling Patterns and Dynamics of Species Occurrence Workshop
Darryl MacKenzie, Proteus Wildlife Research Consultants

Preparations are underway for organizing 2 3-day workshops on modeling patterns and dynamics of species occurrence (see blurb below). Details are yet to be confirmed, but the workshops will be held during the period 14-25 May, 2007. One workshop will be held at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, and the second will likely be held somewhere within the north-eastern US (possibly NY or VT). Cost is to be confirmed, but should be approx. US$550. Workshops will be strictly limited to 20 participants and these are likely to be the only workshops Darryl will run in the US in 2007. At this time, expressions of interest in the workshops are being called for while details are being finalized. People whom express interest in the workshops will be provided with advanced notice once details are confirmed and registration is open. Email darryl@proteus.co.nz to register you interest in these workshops.

Workshop Description:
The presence or absence of a species across a set of landscape units is a fundamental concept used widely in ecology (e.g., as a monitoring metric, species range or distribution, habitat modelling, resource selection probability functions, metapopulation studies, biodiversity and species co-occurrence). An important sampling issue, however, is that a species may not always be detected when present at a landscape unit. This will result in "false absences" causing parameter estimates to be biased if unaccounted for, possibly leading to misleading results and conclusions, even with moderate levels of imperfect detection.

This workshop will cover many of the latest methods for modeling patterns and dynamics of species occurrence in a landscape while accounting for the imperfect detection of the species. Participants will be introduced to available software through worked examples, and there will be special emphasis on aspects of study design. While primarily aimed at the beginner and intermediate level, more experienced researchers will also benefit from attending.

The workshop fee covers registration, morning and afternoon refreshments. Accommodation and meals are not covered in the workshop fee. While full workshop notes will be provided, the recently published book ‘Occupancy estimation and modeling: inferring patterns and dynamics of species occurrence.’ will be regularly referred to during the workshop and it is suggested that participants bring along a copy.
