Bayesian population analysis using JAGS

Instructors: Michael Schaub & Marc Kéry, Swiss Ornithological Institute
Date: 13 – 17 January 2020
Venue: Swiss Ornithological Institute, Sempach, Switzerland
Computers: Bring your own laptop with latest R and JAGS
Registration: CH Fr. 600 (regular); CH Fr. 300 (students)

In the course we introduce many key models used in the analysis of distribution, abundance and survival, as well as their spatial and temporal patterns, in a Bayesian analysis framework. We closely follow our book “Bayesian population analysis using WinBUGS” (Academic Press, 2012), which will be handed out for free. We use the "industry-standard" programs R and JAGS to fit and understand some of the most widely used models for the analysis of animal and plant populations. These include:

• GLMs and generalized linear mixed models (e.g., Link and Sauer 2002)
• Closed-population models for population size
• Cormack-Jolly-Seber models for survival probabilities
• Multistate capture-recapture models for survival and transition rates
• Site-occupancy models (MacKenzie et al. 2002, 2003) for the analysis of species distributions
• Binomial mixture models (Royle 2004) for the analysis of distribution and abundance with full accounting for observation error
• Integrated population models (Besbeas et al. 2002; Schaub & Abadi 2011)

In this intermediate-level workshop about 80% of the time are spent on lecturing and 20% on solving exercises. No previous experience with program JAGS, or Bayesian statistics, is assumed. However, a good working knowledge of modern regression methods (ANOVA, ANCOVA, generalised linear models) and of program R is required.
Send your application to Michael Schaub (michael.schaub@vogelwarte.ch) describing your background and knowledge in statistical modelling, R and WinBUGS/OpenBUGS/JAGS, by 31 October 2019 at the latest. Workshop invitations will be sent out immediately afterwards.
