Short Course: Introduction to Bayesian Statistics using BUGS and JAGS
Instructor: Marc Kéry, Swiss Ornithological Institute, Sempach/Switzerland
Date:
7–9 September 2015
Language: English
Location:
Faculty of Forestry and Forest Ecology, University of Göttingen, Germany.
Costs: 300 Euro.

This 3-day course provides an elementary introduction to the principles of Bayesian statistical modeling in ecology. In a mix of lectures and practical exercises participants learn how to use Bayesian software programs WinBUGS, OpenBUGS or JAGS to fit (generalized) linear models, and (generalized) linear mixed models to ecological data. Throughout the course, all models will also be fit using maximum likelihood, to compare results of the two different methods of statistical inference. Finally, Bayesian hierachical models will be introduced, i.e. breaking complex models into a seried of linked, simpler models, using animal movement as an example application.

Apart from being an introduction to the Bayesian analysis of these models, the workshop provides an excellent general introduction to some core topics of applied statistics. Parts of the course are based based on the successful introductory book to Bayesian statistics by Kéry (Academic Press, 2010), which will be available for purchase during the course.

The course combines lectures and guided practicals and will cover:
• Bayesian analysis of statistical models
• WinBUGS or OpenBUGS as a standalone application
• WinBUGS, OpenBUGS and JAGS called from program R
• Linear models and the design matrix
• Generalized linear models (GLMs)
• Linear mixed models
• Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs)
• Hierarchical models for animal movement

Requirements
No previous experience with Bayesian statistics is assumed. However, a good working knowledge of modern regression methods (ANOVA, ANCOVA and generalised linear models) and of program R is required. Participants are required to bring their own laptops with the latest version of R and WinBUGS or OpenBugs and JAGS.

How to apply: Send a short email describing your research background and previous experience with statistics and R, as well as your main reasons for wanting to attend this course prior to the application deadline (15th July 2015) to Johannes Signer (jsigner@gwdg.de)
