Spatially explicit capture-recapture Montpellier 28-30 June

Postby murray.efford » Sun Nov 03, 2013 11:46 pm

We're offering a workshop on spatially explicit capture–recapture (SECR) to precede the 2014 International Statistical Ecology Conference in Montpellier, France (the workshop runs 28-30 June, the conference 1-4 July 2014). The workshop is aimed at scientists whose field research requires them to estimate population density from spatially referenced detections, and at statisticians interested to learn more about these methods.

The workshop will cover both necessary theory and methods for model fitting using maximum likelihood. Participants will learn how to arrange data for analysis, fit models with the R packages secr and admbsecr, and interpret the results. Prior experience with R is desirable. Topics to be addressed include: detection functions; temporal, spatial and individual covariates of detection; model selection; sex-specific analyses; multi-session analyses; study design; ancillary data from telemetry or sound recording; and spatial trend in density. Field examples will be used throughout. The workshop will also survey recent developments in SECR, including new continuous-time SECR models and methods for acoustic data.

Participants are invited to bring their own data, which should be formatted for secr – see http://www.otago.ac.nz/density. Participants should if possible bring their own laptop computer. Enquiries may be addressed to Murray Efford at murray.efford@otago.ac.nz or David Borchers at dlb@st-andrews.ac.uk. Registration details will follow later in 2013. Cost is expected to be about 240 euro / NZ$400 / US$300 for the 3 days, including snacks and lunch.
