Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling for Ecologists

When: March 24-28, 2014
Where: Porto Alegre, Brazil
Lecturers: Marc kery, Goncalo Ferraz

Application Deadline November 30th
(Anúncio em Português mais abaixo)

This course is based on two successful applied statistics books authored by Marc Kéry and published by Academic Press (2010 and 2012). It introduces hierarchical Bayesian modeling using the BUGS language implemented in the popular BUGS engines WinBUGS and JAGS. Workshop syllabus starts with three days of introduction to essentials of the Bayesian analysis of statistical models, hierarchical models and the BUGS language. This material will be illustrated with ecologically relevant examples, ranging from very simple to moderately complex models. Thereby, a comprehensive overview is provided of linear, generalized linear (GLM), mixed, and generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) in practice. During the last two days two special kinds of GLMMs are covered: static and dynamic site-occupancy models to estimate occupancy and distributional change from replicated detection/nondetection observations while accommodating detection error (MacKenzie et al. 2002, 2003; Tyre et al. 2003), and Cormack-Jolly-Seber models (e.g., Lebreton et al. 1992) to estimate survival from capture-recapture data of marked individuals. Multi-state models are discussed as generalizations of both occupancy and survival models. Ample time is given to solving exercises.

No previous knowledge of Bayesian statistics is assumed; however, participants are required to have some experience in R or another programming language. Because the course will be funded with Brazilian federal government funds for graduate education, we will have to charge a US$500 registration fee for anyone who is not a graduate studente in Brazil. All course lectures and discussion will be in english.

TO APPLY: Send a CV and a short english-written letter describing former experience with ecological modeling and R, as well as main reasons for wanting to attend. This course is geared towards an audience of Brazilian graduate students but we welcome applications from anywhere in the world. Please send materials by email to Silvana Barzotto at ppgecol@ufrgs.br by 30 November 2013 and write “Hierarchical Modeling Workshop Application” in the subject of your message. We will review applications promptly and get back to you no later than December 15th, 2013. There will be approximately 25 participants. Please write to marc.kery@vogelwarte.ch or goncalo.ferraz@ufrgs.br for any further information.
