Workshop Hierarchical Bayesian modeling for ecologists

Instructor: Marc Kéry, Swiss Ornithological Institute, Sempach/Switzerland
Date: 25 February–1 March 2013
Venue: Department of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan
Course fee: 10,000 yen (students), 15,000 yen (other)

This course is based on two recent books authored by Marc Kéry and published by Academic Press (2010 and 2012) and introduces hierarchical Bayesian statistical modeling using the BUGS language implemented in the popular BUGS software. Using WinBUGS or JAGS run exclusively from program R, the first three days are spent by progressing through ecologically relevant examples ranging from very simple to moderately complex models, providing a comprehensive overview of linear, generalized linear (GLM), mixed and generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) in practice. During the last two days special kinds of GLMMs are covered: N-mixture models (Royle 2004) to estimate abundance and detectability from replicated counts and static, dynamic and multi-species site-occupancy models (MacKenzie et al. 2002, 2003; Tyre et al. 2003; MacKenzie et al. 2003; Dorazio et al. 2006) to estimate occupancy, distributional change and community traits (e.g., species richness), while accommodating detection error, from replicated detection/nondetection observations. Ample time is given to the solving of exercises. Course language is English.

There are 3 free seats for this workshop, which was first announced for Japanese scientists. Please send your applications to Marc Kéry at marc.kery@vogelwarte.ch by 31 December 2012 at the latest.
