Matrix Population Models for Management and Conservation Short Course

27-30 August, 2012
University of Alaska, Fairbanks
Fairbanks, AK
Instructors:
Dr. Jean-Dominique Lebreton, Director of Research, CNRS, France
Dr. Christine Hunter, Institute of Arctic Biology, UAF

Studies of population dynamics aim to understand variation in population size and structure to answer questions in fundamental and applied population biology. This workshop will cover the construction and analysis of matrix models, from deterministic models to models incorporating environmental and demographic stochasticity, density-dependence, spatial structure and related topics. We emphasize the use of models as tools to answer biological questions, and their application to the conservation and management of plant and animal populations. The workshop is intended to be both an introduction to matrix models and a gateway to more advanced applications.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own data to explore during the workshop. The workshop will comprise of a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and analysis of participant’s data. Computer exercises will use program ULM, a free, user-friendly program. Participants should have a general interest in quantitative methods and will benefit from a familiarity with basic calculus, matrix algebra and population dynamics. Additional information on workshop content and program ULM are available at https://sites.google.com/site/matrixpopulationmodelsworkshop/.

Registration: regular $500; student $250. Register through the above website or contact Nichole Kloepfer at ndkloepfer@alaska.edu. For inquiries about course content contact christine.hunter@alaska.edu or jean-dominique.lebreton@cefe.cnrs.fr.
