Introductory-level workshop - Introduction to WinBUGS for Ecologists
Applied Bayesian statistical modeling from t-test to generalized linear mixed models

Instructors: Marc Kéry (Swiss Ornithological Institute) and
Viviana Ruiz-Gutiérrez (Cornell University)
Date: 10–14 December 2012
Venue: Estación Biológica de Doñana (EBD), Sevilla, Spain
Costs: 500 Euro

This course is based on the successful book with the same title published by Academic Press in 2010 and introduces Bayesian statistical modeling using the BUGS language implemented in the popular WinBUGS, OpenBUGS and JAGS software. It starts at a truly beginner’s level and expects only basic knowledge of regression and R programming. Using WinBUGS or JAGS run exclusively from program R, the course progresses through ecologically relevant examples ranging from very simple to moderately complex models, providing a comprehensive overview of linear, generalized linear (GLM), mixed and generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) in practice. The last day covers two special kinds of GLMMs: N-mixture models (Royle, Biometrics, 2004) to estimate abundance and detectability from replicated counts and site-occupancy models (MacKenzie et al., Ecology, 2002; Tyre et al., Ecol. App., 2003) to estimate occupancy and detection probability from replicated detection/nondetection observations. Ample time is given to the solving of exercises. Course language is English, but both instructors are fluent in Spanish.

Please send your applications to Marc Kéry at marc.kery@vogelwarte.ch by 31 October 2012 at the latest.
