Introduction to WinBUGS and JAGS for Ecologists
A Bayesian approach to regression, ANOVA,
mixed models and related analyses

Instructor: Marc Kéry, Swiss Ornithological Institute, Sempach/Switzerland
Date: 17–19 September 2012
Venue: University of Zürich, Irchel Campus, Winterthurerstrasse 189, Zürich, Switzerland
Costs (for external students): 200.- Swiss Francs

This 3-day course is based on the successful book with the same name published in 2010 by Academic Press. It provides an elementary introduction to the principles of Bayesian statistical modeling and on how the Bayesian software programs WinBUGS, OpenBUGS or JAGS are used to fit linear models, generalized linear models, linear mixed models and generalized linear mixed models. WinBUGS and JAGS will be run from software R and for a comparison, all analyses will also be conducted in the likelihood framework of inference using R functions such as lm(), glm() and glmer(). Thus, apart from being an introduction to the Bayesian analysis of these models, the workshop provides an excellent general introduction to these core topics of applied statistics. Ample time is given to the solving of exercises.

The course is primarily for participants from the Life Science Graduate School at the University of Zürich, but about 10 external participants will be accepted. Participants should have a background in statistics using a programming language such as R, GenStat or SAS. Participants should bring their own laptops with a recent version of R (with package arm installed) as well as WinBUGS 1.4 (http://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/bugs/winbu ... ents.shtml) installed (also download the upgrade patch and the immortality key). Alternatively, they could have functional versions of OpenBUGS or JAGS.

Please send your application to Philippe Saner (philippe.saner@uzh.ch) at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies.
