Wildlife density estimation with spatially explicit capture-recapture data

7 to 11 March 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Capture-recapture methods with marked animals have long been used to estimate animal abundance, but density estimation - and hence extrapolation beyond the trapping area - depended on ad hoc methods of estimating the effective trapping area. Recently developed methods for spatially explicit capture-recapture (SECR) make full use of the information on capture locations to directly calculate density.

The workshop will be led by Murray Efford of Otago University (NZ) and will focus on practical data analysis using Murray's 'secr' package in R, with brief introductions to alternative approaches using WinBUGS and the SPACECAP package.

Details of the workshop are at http://www.bcss.org.my. Only a few places are still available, so if you are interested act quickly!
