MARK & Distance Workshop - December - Phnom Penh, Cambod

Postby geryan » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:40 pm

WWF Greater Mekong - Cambodia Country Programme is planning an introductory workshop on abundance estimation using programs MARK and Distance. This workshop is aimed at providing traning for local and regional scientists and researchers from the conservation sector.

The workshop will take place on 9-15 December, 2009 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Dr. Paul F. Doherty, Jr., Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, Colorado State University, USA will teach the workshop. Dr. Doherty is a recognized expert on the use of Programs MARK and Distance and has led many workshops on this subject. We are fortunate that he can come to Cambodia to provide this training.

Schedule:

9 -12 December, Capture-mark-recapture methods and Program MARK This workshop will primarily focus on abundance metrics. We will discuss fundamental background material, classic closed-capture models, as well as modern developments. We will learn how to implement these analyses in Program MARK. Note – those only wanting training in Program MARK, do not need to attend the training in Program Distance on 14-15 December.

13 Dec (Sunday) Break

14-15 Dec, Distance sampling methods and Program Distance This workshop will build on the previous 4 days (i.e., background fundamentals will not be covered again). We will focus on estimation of density using distance sampling methods in Program Distance. This will be an introduction in which we will discuss analyzing data from line transects, point transects, and methods associated with clustered observations.

We intend to limit participation in the workshop to 20 persons. There has been strong interest in this training so the workshop will likely fill up fast. The fee for the workshop is US$250, exclusive of all accomodation, travel and incidental expenses.
