Abstract

Studies of species occurrence are common in ecology and may range from monitoring programmes focusing on the proportion of area occupied by a species, to species distribution models, or to address community-level questions such as changes in biodiversity. At the core of species occurrence studies is collecting data on the presence/absence of the target species within a region of interest, which is oftentimes further confounded by the imperfect detection of the species, resulting in false absences. The results of such studies are only as good as the quality of the data that goes into any analysis, and good data are more likely to result when a study is well designed.

With over 20 years of experience in the area, Darryl has seen some very good, and some very bad, study designs. In this free webinar Darryl will pass on his 5 top tips for designing a good species occurrence study and conclude with a 10-minute Q&A session.

About the speaker

Darryl MacKenzie has over 20 years of experience in working with species occurrence data, and been a key member of the group of colleagues that unleashed ‘occupancy models’ on the world, starting with their seminal 2002 paper (MacKenzie et al. 2002) that has been cited over 5000 times (according to Google Scholar). Currently Darryl in Principal Biometrician at Proteus, a New Zealand-based statistical consulting company that specialises in ecological and wildlife applications, with clients all around the world.
